Virginia is for Weddings

By Dorothy Willis

Blacksburg, VA– What is Virginia known for? The birthplace of presidents? Peanuts? Dogwood trees?

At New River Valley Bridals and Events, founder Marivic Gallimore believes Virginia is for weddings!
“Early in 2014, I was looking to branch out statewide in Virginia with the idea of a project from which everyone in the wedding industry could really benefit,” said Gallimore. She wanted to create a DMV license plate branded with the phrase “Virginia is for Weddings” to promote wedding businesses and the overall industry. “It was my brain child project,” she said, “It would be amazing to see down the road, Virginia is for Weddings.”

With assistance and support from Didi Russell from the Virginia Wedding and Event Network, there is much dedication to this cause focusing on a team approach. Didi Russell stated, “Marivic and I are always striving to improve the wedding industry and provide better opportunities for brides and vendors. We have ideas and bounce them off one another, get inspired by each other and help streamline ideas.” Russell also added, “The wedding and event industry in Virginia alone brings in hundreds of millions of dollars each year. The small business owners that make up the wedding and event industry are largely unsupported. This campaign is tied to a great charity and it will also provide well-deserved attention to our local wedding industry.”

For years, Virginia nonprofits (such as Friends of Blue Ridge Parkway) have been raising money for their cause through the annual renewal of DMV license plates made by their supporters. Gallimore created the nonprofit New River Valley Bridals and Events as an effort to promote businesses that offer bridal and special event services, create networking opportunities and give back to the community. To further promote her cause, Gallimore created a plan to create the Virginia is for Weddings license plate campaign to raise both awareness and funds for New River Valley Bridals and Events. “My hope is that this exciting project will help us raise funds for sustainability of our other community projects, like the annual Make a Wedding Wish Come True,” she added.

So what will this license plate look like? Gallimore and her marketing team plan to hold a design contest this summer. Following the guidelines provided by the DMV, followers and supporters will have the opportunity to submit potential license plate designs. Designs may be used in part or in their entirety on the actual official license plate. More details about the campaign and design contest can be found on the Virginia is for Weddings Facebook page.

Help support the wedding industry in Virginia and show everyone what Virginia has to offer! Russell added, “Show the world that Virginia is for Weddings! Wineries, beaches, historic, modern, countryside, rustic elegance – Virginia has something for every couple!” For more information on how to purchase an official Virginia is for Weddings DMV license plate, log on to www.virginiaisforweddings.org/license-plate/.
